Strengthening toy safety: ECHA takes on new tasks

ECHA will now assess chemical safety in toys, process companies’ derogation requests to use prohibited chemicals and provide scientific recommendations via expert committees. These new responsibilities are because of the new Toy Safety Regulation (TSR), which entered into force on 1 January 2026.

As ever ECHA will work with the European Commission to implement the new regulation by:

  • Conducting safety assessments on chemical substances in toys when requested and using expert opinions by the Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC); and
  • Evaluating derogation requests from industry who seek permission to use prohibited chemicals, with assessments by both RAC and the Committee for Socio-Economic Analysis (SEAC).

Contact Matthew at LKC for further advice on industry responsibilities to conduct scientific assessments to demonstrate the safe use of chemicals in toys in the EU.
